Finally, although our workshop is fully equipped with state of the art diagnostic systems, tools and equipment our overheads are low compared with a multi-million pound dealership allowing us to deliver outstanding value for money. At only £43.00 + VAT (£51.60) for workshop labour compared to franchised dealer rates and possibly be carried out by a less qualified technician.

TECHNICAR LABOUR RATE: £43.00 + VAT (£51.60) per hour

Our labour rate is a huge saving on many independents and all manufacturers labour rates. An average 30 - 65% reduction soon adds up to a huge saving on any repair bill.

In 2014 a major warranty company carried out a survey into labour rates and found independent workshop rates are significantly lower than those offered by the fanchised dealer. At the time of the report the average for independents hourly rate was £63.56 whilst the franchised dealer rate was £92.11 for the same period. The most expensive labour rate was found to be an eye watering £215 at a London dealership with another two London garages at more than £200. The UK's overall combined (franchised and independent) average was £74.33.

And don't be put off by the common misconception that your warranty would become void by using our services. Thanks to European legislation, providing we only use manufacturers recommended parts and follow the recommended servicing schedule which ensures your warranty remains fully intact.

What is block exemption?

In 2003 European Union legislation 'Block exemption' came into force 1400/2002 and has since had additional updates, the latest being 1st June 2010 461/2010.

Essentially this is a freedom of competition law that gives motorists more freedom in their decision as to who should repair and service their vehicles - now, any garage can be used without invalidating the manufacturer's warranty subject to following certain conditions. This was as a result of four specific 'freedoms' that were introduced, aimed at safeguarding free competition in the entire market for vehicle spare parts, service and repair. Briefly this means:

  • Parts distributors can supply parts of the appropriate quality to dealers and authorised repairers without the manufacturer / assembler using dealer / repairer contracts or other means to prevent them.
  • Anyone with a legitimate need for technical information has a right of access to it, in a usable form and at a reasonable cost.

The Block Exemption Regulation (BER) covers service and maintenance during the warranty period and prohibits vehicle manufacturer's warranties from including conditions requiring that all normal maintenance be provided within the vehicle manufacture's network. nor all parts used must be the manufacturer's original spare parts.

The European Commission declared that such clauses in a warranty document would represent 'an unjustified restriction for the consumer'.

Independent repairers CAN carry out normal maintenance and repair services during a vehicle's warranty period without invalidating the warranty conditions provided that :-

  • The service is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's servicing schedules and is recorded as such.
  • The parts used are of the appropriate quality' and are recorded as such.
